Industrial Hygiene and Safety Branch
Protection of public health and the environment begins with protecting our employees who work with potentially hazardous chemicals and materials. The Industrial Hygiene and Safety Branch (IHSB) within the Human and Ecological Risk Division provides scientific and field support in a comprehensive and compliant employee protection program. Employee protection is accomplished by confirming medical suitability, performing air monitoring and recommending or requiring personal protective equipment during site visits. Additionally, the IHSB also provides respiratory protection training and fit-testing to its employees and training them in hazard recognition and avoidance. The IHSB also directs and maintains a comprehensive medical monitoring program, and provides the mandated Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training curriculum. The branch is also tasked with safety equipment evaluation, procurement, and maintenance. Community and employee protection is also accomplished by IHSB review and verification of contractor’s health and safety plans.
Cal/EPA, and federal and local agencies routinely call upon IHSB to provide expertise regarding selection, use and limitations of chemical protective clothing, exposure monitoring, and hazardous waste site safety. |
